Building a sustainable food system

The food system is broken when a few companies dominate the market, prioritizing profits over people and our planet, when government policies put the interests of corporate agribusiness over the livelihoods of farm families.

Our current food system is leading our nation to an unsustainable future. 

We need to have a different vision. We know we can build a food system that gives our communities equal access to healthy food, and respects the dignity of the farmers who produce it.

Canada gives $3.3bn subsidies to fossil fuel producers despite climate pledge

Government subsidy to gas and oil companies undermine Trudeau’s plan to put national price on carbon dioxide by 2018, environmental report warned


A study by four major Canadian environmental groups has shown that carbon pricing risks being undermined by billions of dollars in subsidies to fossil fuel interests, from both federal and provincial governments.

We need to immediately stop building new fossil fuel projects, and fully invest in 100% renewable energy for all so we can phase out those already in use. Investors and governments have a responsibility to both divest from climate destruction and accelerate the just transition to a 100% renewable energy economy.

How can we trust our government  when they continue to hand nearly hundreds of billions of dollars in government subsidies to the coal, gas, and oil industries?

Ending these subsidies would be a giant step towards solving the climate crisis saving gigatonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, and helping make clean energy cheaper than fossil fuels.

A massive cleanup of low-level radioactive soil has begun in Port Hope. But some in the pretty lakeside town are still asking: What's the truth here?

Helen Caldicott sentenced Port Hope to death.

“It's a disaster,” the renowned doctor and anti-nuclear activist told a gathering of Port Hopers and a crush of reporters crammed into a hotel in Oshawa.

The mess can't be cleaned up, Caldicott said flatly of the low-level radioactive waste sprinkled around Port Hope.

“The entire town should be relocated and the Cameco refinery should be shut down.”

Back in Port Hope, residents sighed with frustration, gearing up for yet another fight to save the reputation of their town.

“Caldicott didn't even come here ... she said all those things from Oshawa and left,” says Liz Stewart, 61, a longtime resident. “We are tired of people doing this to Port Hope without knowing the facts. The town is safe and can absolutely be cleaned up.”

And just like that, Port Hope was back in the spotlight.
