Communities in Canada looking to reduce their dependence on fossil fuels

An off-grid community goes solar, and gets closer to its roots

One of the last communities in the N.W.T. to get electricity is becoming a model for other Northern communities looking to reduce their dependence on fossil fuels.

Colville Lake, pop. 160 and roughly 50 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, only got its first power plant in the early 1990s.


Lutsel K'e Dene First Nation enters the power business

The Lutsel K'e Dene First Nation, an isolated community in the Northwest Territories, is celebrating becoming the first independent power producer in all three territories.

Adidas, the German maker of sportswear and equipment, has announced it will start marketing its first series of shoes manufactured by robots in Germany from 2017.

China Is Executing To Plan: Foxconn Replaces 60,000 Workers With Robots

On March 16, officials approved the latest Five Year Plan for China’s economy.
The ultimate goal of the plan is to overtake Germany, Japan, and the United States in terms of manufacturing sophistication by 2049, the 100th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.

To make that happen, the government needs Chinese manufacturers to adopt robots by the millions. It also wants Chinese companies to start producing more of these robots, , and to enable that there is an initiative making billions of yuan available for manufacturers to upgrade to technologies including advanced machinery and robots.

42% of Canadian jobs at high risk of being affected by automation, new study suggests

The Brookfield Institute for Innovation + Entrepreneurship at Toronto's Ryerson University said in its report that automation previously has been restricted to routine, manual tasks. However, breakthroughs in artificial intelligence and advanced robotics now means that automation is moving into "cognitive, non-routine tasks and occupations, such as driving and conducting job interviews."
